This Blog Has Moved

We have changed our platform.

Go to http://pptc.org/category/blog/ for the latest news on the Prospect Park Track Club.

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

On October 27, 2012 the Prospect Park Track Club will run the last ten miles of the New York City Marathon Course.

This information should be useful to anyone who is joining us.

As a group we are leaving at 8am, on October 27th, on 1st Ave and 60th Street.  There is a Starbucks on the right (East) side of road. It will be you last chance to use plumbing.

Before I continue I need to point out that neither the Prospect Park Track Club nor any of it's members are providing any traffic control during this event.  You will be running on open roads.  Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians do not always follow the law or act in predictable ways.  So be careful and pay attention to your surroundings, nobody is doing that for you.  This is also the time to unplug you earphones so you can be that much more aware of your environment.

That said you should run up the left (west) side of First Ave.  At 125th St, under the Triborough Bridge we will have our fist aid station on the left, there is also a bike lane on the left.  The pedrestrian path on the Willis Ave Bridge is also on the left.

However the path comes to an abrupt end as you enter The Bronx.

YES, TURN LEFT
GO DOWN THE STAIRS
DOWN
Actually on October 27th the ramp was open and we were able to avoid the stairs. One less street to cross.
THIS IS THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS, MAKE A RIGHT TURN AND GO UNDER THE BRIDGE
THIS IS WHAT YOU SEE WHEN YOU TURN TO THE RIGHT.  CROSS THE STREET AND MAKE A LEFT.

This is what you see when you cross under the bridge, (it is now to your left).  Follow the crosswalks and the streetlights and get to the sidewalk.
Use this sidewalk to cross over the Major Deegan Expressway.
After crossing over The Deegan, follow the traffic signal and crosswalk to get to the Mobil Station.

Turn left and you are again on the Marathon Course.

You are almost at Mile 20, Make a mental note of how good you feel.

Remember, to use that note on Nov 4.

Follow the Marathon signs back to the Madison Ave Bridge and Manhattan.  The pedestrian entrance to the Madison Ave Bridge is on the Right.

The follow 5th Ave back to Central Park.  We will have aid at Engineers Gate and more goodies in the Tavern on the Green Parking lot.

Again, this is a course inspection, not a race.  Take it easy and bring a MetroCard, some cash and your phone.

This is a link to the official route.  I don't see the point of making the dimple on course and laving 138th Street in the Bronx.  Also, The sidewalk on Central Park South is often dense with tourists.  You can have some surprises on Nov. 4

2012 New York City Marathon Activities

last update

you know the race was cancelled...

Important Update as of Nov. 2 1:00 pm

Our permit for PS 87 has been cancelled.  There will be no PPTC reunion area and we can not bring your baggage to the finish line.

On Sunday, October 28th Saturday October 27 The Prospect Park Track Club is sponsoring a group run of the last 10 miles of the NYC Marathon course. We will meet under the 59th Street Bridge at 1st Avenue and be ready to run by 8 AM. As usual this run will be supported by a rolling aid station. There will be Gatorade, cold water and energy food waiting for us before we cross the Willis Ave Bridge (1st Avenue and 125th Street) and as we enter Central Park (90th Street at Engineers Gate). At the “finish line” (the Tavern on the Green parking lot) there will be more goodies waiting for us. This event is free and is for PPTC members and their invited guests only. Please RSVP to membership@pptc.org.

Update: THE RUNNING OF THE LAST 10 MILES HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SATURDAY OCT 27TH SO WILL WILL NOT CRASH INTO THE NYRR POLAND SPRING KICKOFF. STILL 8AM.
The importance of this run cannot be stressed enough. Seven days later you will be running this same route after covering 16 miles. You will have the memory of how easy and fun it was with fresh feet and how close the finish line is. This is also a great run for someone who is not running the NYC Marathon - it is a way to “have a taste” of the Marathon.

On Marathon Sunday, we are happy to announce that JackRabbit Sports is again joining us in transporting Brooklyn runners to the Start. Buses will be leaving from in front of their Brooklyn store at 151 7th Avenue (between Garfield and Carroll) and will take you to Fort Wadsworth. Buses will leave promptly at 6 AM and will not wait. JackRabbit will be open at 5 AM on Marathon Sunday. They will be providing  a bathroom, a place to be warm and dry, and the opportunity to purchase any last minute items.

In addition, we will be offering a bag check so you can have clean, dry clothes and other belongings waiting for you when you finish – bags will be at the PPTC Marathon reunion area (see below).  Bags will be brought from JackRabbit to PS 87.  So if you need anything at Fort  Wadsworth, don’t leave it at JackRabbit.  Please make it a tiny bag, we don’t plan on renting a truck.

UDATE: AS OF OCTOBER 5th, THE BUSES ARE FULL

The cost for bus transportation is $10 for PPTC members and $15 for “friends.” All seats are prepaid and go quickly. There are no walk-ons – reservations and advance payment is required. If you are taking the PPTC bus, you will need to be in front of Jack Rabbit Sports no later than 5:45 AM to be checked in.  Go here  (https://nycruns.com/races/?race=pptc-marathon-bus) for a link to reserve your place on the bus.

After the race we have our own Marathon reunion area. You can meet your friends and family at PS 87, located on West 77th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam. It is just 2 blocks from the finish line. We will provide hot chocolate, fruit, cold soda, bagels and an indoor restroom with a place to change. This event is free and open to PPTC Members and their “friends” who joined us on the marathon bus. We just ask that you let us know if you are going to join us.  Again please RSVP to membership@pptc.org if you plan on coming to the school.   If you checked a bag with us when you boarded the bus at JackRabbit it will be waiting for you at the school.

September 2012 THE INSIDE LOOP

TOM BYRNES and FRIENDS

Congrats to Irene and Gil Torres on their son Keith's recent marriage to Cairyn Holmes in early July. Gil has been seen back on the roads logging some miles fast and slow so who knows.

And yes, in case you were losing sleep wondering,  , it was PPTC's Keith Williams who was the very first club member to ask if there would be a PPTC bus to the start of the NYC marathon this November.

Bobby Fisher getting back in to the bike mode participating in  the very hilly 75 mile Hudson Valley Rail ride on July 22.

Tom Byrnes' grandson Jake celebrated his six  month birthday with family and friends on July   25th,  he'll now be entering a new age category,  little boys  six months to a year, who can't really crawl or walk yet but he's gotta be thinking of it ....

Dennis Sivack not letting the tides change too often without getting into the wet with Brooklyn's Sebago Canoe and Kayak club

Congrats to Clair Dougherty on her recent Brooklyn Bridge Swim , from the Dumbo area near the base of the bridge on the Brooklyn side across to Manhattan . No MTA card needed.

From PPTC's Carolyn Kubitchek we learn that four runners at the Central Park Track Club have qualified for the Olympics. Their coach, Devon Martin (who happens to be Dave and Carolyn's   daughter-in-law) is going to the Games in London to work with them. If you watched any of the Games on television, hope you kept an  eye out for Jeremy Bascom, Erison Hurtault, Julius Mutekanga and Moussa Dembele.   Perhaps you even got  a glimpse of Devon herself trackside .

PPTC's sympathies and prayers go out for Lou Vazquez Sr. who died on July 25th . Often along with his sidekicks Warren Ring and Jake Korn , Lou had officiated at  PPTC's  Summer Speed Series for over 20 years, He was also a race official for the NYS Empire games for over 20yrs as well as  a race official for NYRR at their events/ Two of his  two sons and daugfhter in law  excelled in road racing , Lou and Phil  and Anne Dolan Vazquez  , his grandchildren Lou and PattiAnn seem to be  intent on following in their parents footsteps. His son Edward  and his wife were  a  force behind the volunteer scene at Bishop Ford  at the Kenny Dolan 5k every year . There was  a moment of silence for him at the Summer Speed Series Wednesday July 25th coupled with  a loud round of applause to honor the celebration of his life and commitment to running. As was Mr. Vazquez's wish, PPTC made a donation in his name to Sean Rice's Prospect Park Youth Runners program
A mid August posting of Facebook captured Pete Tomasi up high and personal manning the hose on one of the Port Jervis fire apparatus at a conflagration  up there . And to think, we knew him when he was "Pistol Pete".

Thanks to Tom Tobin for passing along some vintage pics from back in the day of current USA Olympian Matt Centrowitz competing in one of the Rockaway Running series races on the boardwalk . From a Rockaway 5k to a 1500 on London's Olympic stage. In how many years?

PPTC is once again on  the Ironman map with Mark Crowthers' competing in Saturday August 11th's  NYC event.   Don't know how many PPTCers knew Cecil Bakaalor when he was crunching the ironman distance some years ago , he's been off PPTC radar for a while.  Cecil had placed in his age at Hawaii.

Thanks to PPTC past president Bobby Fisher for  news on the latest plans for updates to the Prospect Park YMCA's facility  on 9th street and 15th street as well as reports on the progress of the pool. Unfortunately Bobby was hit from behind while on one of his bike tours in August and had to be hospitalized with a broken clavicle. At first there was the suspicion of broken ankles and possibly a broken leg or two but  subsequent xrays brought good news and no breaks ( except for the clavicle)He left the hospital and recovered at home with the help of family and friends and is now back at work at the 9th Street Y. He was thinking of giving up the sport but now theres some enthusiasm back in his voice and I'm told a glimmer in his eye when the talk turns to getting back in the saddle and  biking tours.

Tom Tobin mentions his recent conversations with  Marvlyn Jno-Batiste, at the Grand Finale Triple Crown race in Coney Island Sunday September 9th. Marvlyn just earned her masters degree from Columbia which had been taking up most of her time the last few years. She said she’s now ready to return to some serious training and running. Watch for her at races , welcome back Marvlyn!

Tom Tobin also mentions PPTC's  members'  good performances in the Brooklyn Triple Crown. No final  final results yet but Tom believes Tony Watson, Danielle Hansen, Tom Tobin himself  and new member Brian Culley all placed in age groups.

From Lou Vazquez we learn that the outdoor track at Icahn Stadium on Randall's island  is being torn up and then another will be reinstalled . The track at Icahn has produced some produce world class performances so the best is yet to come !

PPTC sympathies to Carolyn Kubitschek and family on the death of her brother Craig in early September.

Tom Byrnes out there on the roads in the NYC Century on Sunday September 9th. Marc and Joann Guralnick also rode but they had entered  at the Prospect Park start whereas Tom had ridden to the 110th street start in northern Central Park. At 6am Sunday September 9th, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse, at least along the PPW bike lane and then down 9th Street and then....

Fall's coming as if i needed to remind you.

See you on the roads.

TIPS TO HELP YOU SLOW DOWN YOUR HECTIC PACE THIS SUMMER Christine Boutross

TIPS TO HELP YOU SLOW DOWN YOUR HECTIC PACE THIS SUMMER
Christine Boutross

Tip 1: When you go on vacation, really go on vacation. Unplug your mobile devices and see how this
feels. Allow yourself to disconnect from your phone, laptop and iPad. You will feel that your body has
recharged and that will help you relax. How many of you can really do this?

Tip 2: Can you challenge yourself? Sign up with a running or swim coach or a Personal Trainer. It's
important to see that exercise can really make your body feel awesome. Set yourself a goal. Your trainer
or coach can help you accomplish your goals.

Tip 3: Self Care: When is the last time you spent time with yourself? You need time to reconnect with
yourself, recharge your batteries or just have time for YOU! It is so necessary because of the hectic pace
we keep.

Tip 4: Pick one thing that you want to change or improve in your health. Do you want to clean up your
diet, do a detox, be less stressed or need help with planning healthy meals? Speak with a health coach.
He/she can help guide you with steps to set goals and be successful.

What are your plans this summer?

REMEMBERING HARRY

REMEMBERING HARRY

In January 1993, PPTC lost our coach, mentor and friend, Harry Murphy. Regina Cahill and Claire
Dougherty are spearheading a celebration of Harry’s life. You can be part of the commemorative events
beginning in January 2013 by sending your photos and stories about Harry to harrymurphy@gmail.com.

In his quiet, always encouraging way, Harry launched many runners. He single-handedly turned couch
potatoes into sub-4 hour marathoners. He ran 2:41 in his youth and went on to be a founding father of
both NYRR and PPTC. His spirit lives on in Prospect Park.

Stay tuned for the commemorative events beginning in January 2013.

PPTC VOLUNTEER REWARDS PROGRAM

PPTC VOLUNTEER REWARDS PROGRAM

Prospect Park Track Club is continuing the Rewards Program for 2012 which was initiated in 2011 as a
small token of thanks to the volunteers who spend some of their time volunteering doing many different
jobs to make our club a continued success. If you are unfamiliar with this program it works like this:
Any PPTC member who volunteers for a minimum of ten hours in the calendar year 2012 will be entitled
to receive from PPTC, in appreciation of their help, one of the following rewards.

1) An article of clothing (your choice if available) from the PPTC Product Catolog

or 2) Free entry into either of our two races, Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot or Cherry Tree in February

or 3) An additional one year free membership to PPTC

There are many volunteer opportunities available to get in your ten hours, for example, helping with the
various races, Turkey Trot, Cherry Tree,Speed Series, Picnic, Race Committee, Articles for the Newsletter
etc.

To make sure you get credit for your time it is important that you let the person in charge of the project
know that you are there to help.

PPTC ELECTIONS

PPTC ELECTIONS
Staci Pierson

The PPTC Board of Directors wishes to congratulate Jason Horowitz and Lynda Mules for being elected
to three-year director terms in May. Jason Horowitz served during the previous term as director and
chairs the clothing and IT committees. This is the first term for Lynda Mules who leads our PPTC
women’s team.

The 2012 election was the second year that we used online voting; 93 members logged on to vote while
we mailed approximately 15 paper ballots to members without access to email. The online ballot was
promoted via email and social media (FaceBook, etc.).

As the online ballot is a still a somewhat new format, the elections committee greatly appreciates all
of the feedback received so far to improve the process. If you experienced a problem with the online
ballot or have a suggestion for improving the process please email suggestions to elections@pptc.org.

Looking ahead to 2013, all officer positions will be up for re-election as will a few director positions.
It will be a big election year for PPTC. It’s never too early to start thinking about whether or not you
would like to run. We’ll also need volunteers to for the elections committee. If you are interested in
helping with the 2013 election, please email elections@pptc.org.

What you do not know because you are not me

Good Racing Form
Michael Ring

I am not talking about how to run faster or further. This is about how to be a better citizen in the
racing community.

I have been racing for a while (not as long as many of you, I am sure) and I have observed many
changes in what people think is acceptable behavior at a race.

RFD technology (Chips, D-tags, B-tags) has changed the way people approach the starting
line. Back in the day, there used to be a lot of pushing and shoving at the starting line. That was not
always so nice. If you started 25 feet behind the line, you had to run 25 more feet in that race, but more
importantly if you started 30 seconds after the leaders, you had to run 30 seconds faster than they were
running to win an award. This might not sound so bad, but remember, awards are based on age and
gender, so a 60-year old had the same motivation to be at the starting line as the 25-year olds. Needless
to say, this got a little messy in a large race. Now, the stress of bring at the starting line when the gun
goes off is gone, but some people don’t care when they start. Hey, people! This is a race! Just because
the last race you ran had 80,000 people in it and starting corrals spread out across two boroughs doesn’t
mean you can be drinking coffee two blocks from the start in a volunteer, community-based race. Most
races start on time and when the Race Director says GO! There is no excuse to be late.

Since my kids were born I carry my phone when I run. It is small and I don’t want to worry
about it in baggage check. But I don’t use it. However, too many times I have had to run around
someone who was yakking on their phone (or texting). Not only are they a hazard to other people on the
course, but they are insulting them. A race is an athletic competition; when I am running as fast as I can
and get passed by someone who is texting, it hurts.

Giant charities have also gotten involved in racing. This is good and bad. Yes, it is good that
more money is gong to charity. However, sometimes the concept of racing has been thrown out the
window. Entire offices, schools or religious groups use a specific race as a fundraising tool. They
often “run” the race as a unit, often in jeans and holding Starbucks cups. I know the front of the pack
would not be the front with out the back of the pack, but this is getting ridiculous. The front of the pack
should not have to say excuse me to the back of the pack.

I don’t like to use headphones, but I can see how others might enjoy them when running.
However, you have to be able to hear instructions from race officials. The vast majority of course
marshals are volunteers and it is not fair to make them chase you because you did not hear them
say, “Turn here.” It is even worse when a Race Director or Medic says, “Are you OK?” and you cannot
hear them. People are giving up their morning to make your race experience better, the least you can do
is be able to hear them.

At the edge of comical are the actions that have been observed at water stations. When you are
done with your cup, throw it in a pail, or drop it on the ground. But do not put half a cup of water back
on the table. Think about it.

As a race director I have seen many first time racers get a little “overdramatic” at the finish
line. It is OK to finish your fist 5K in 30 minutes or more. But please don’t run the last 50 yards like a
maniac and collapse on the finish line. There is still someone behind you and if you are flopping around
like a fish in the timing mats, you are just in the way.

I hope this short essay will start many conversations. Maybe so of the runners that are new to our sport
will enjoy their experience more.

And another thing; Just because you are wearing a chip that tracks your time that does not mean you do
not have to make your bib visible on the front, not on the back, of your clothes. Why not on the back?
Because your body can block the electronic timing from recording your finishing time.*. Never mind
that sometimes technology fails and there are people using those bibs to keep track of the order and time
of racers crossing the finish line. But you are in a race, the difference between someone running a race
and someone who is not is that they are wearing a number on their shirt.

*This pertains to B chips that are part of a bib. Otherwise, it identifies a runner as newbie, someone
who isn’t in the know and is not cool.

FREE FIREWORKS FRIDAYS GROUP RUN: AN IDEA INTO ACTION

FREE FIREWORKS FRIDAYS GROUP RUN: AN IDEA INTO ACTION

Jess Yeomans

Starting a new project can be extremely exciting… and equally daunting. As a full-time
freelancer, I’m constantly training myself to focus on what it is that excites me for each
new project. Without it, production suffers and the process becomes stale; productiveness
is fueled by passion. As passionate as I am about my job, I’m equally passionate about
running, so when the idea to start a group run to Coney Island entered my head, the
excitement launched into action.

Every Friday throughout the summer, hundreds of Brooklynites flock to Coney Island
to enjoy a free fireworks show. The first show of 2012 took place on June 15th, the night
before the PPTC picnic. While watching the show, I had the idea to organize a one-time
group run from Prospect Park to Coney Island with the fireworks as our reward. The
next day I shared the thought with Lynda Mules, who agreed that it was a good idea. So
I decided to run with it. After sending out an email on the PPTC forum and receiving a
great deal of positive feedback, the idea began to grow. Why not make this more than just
a one-night event? Why not open this up to runners outside of PPTC? Why not make this
HUGE?! And with that, the Free Fireworks Fridays Group Run was born. With guidance
from Michael Ring, the FFFGR Facebook page was created and quickly gained 60+
members in the first week.

Then came time for our first run on June 29th. Naturally, anxiety tried to creep in.
Are people going to show up? Will everyone have a good time? What if someone dies
running in that heat?! As nerve-wracking as it was, I wouldn’t let myself get wrapped up
in the negative. This was about running and having a good time, right? So let’s run and
have a good time!

The worries began to fade away as I stood in front of 10 other runners who came out to
join the first FFFGR. After the (very hot) 6 mile run, we made it to Coney Island (alive)
and celebrated under the fireworks with beer and hot dogs. A couple PPTC’ers even
brought their families along to hang out with us. Sigh of relief… it was a success!

Though we’ve only had one run I believe this will continue to grow and evolve into
a memorable summer event. FFFGR is the product of colliding passions; running,
entertainment, creativity and community. Anyone can start a successful group run,
especially if you can incorporate your own passions into the mix. If you’ve thought about
starting your own group run, I want to encourage you to take a leap of faith, both in
yourself and in our PPTC family to help launch your own idea into action.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who celebrated the inaugural FFFGR,
it wouldn’t have been possible without you: Allison Nickerson, Beverly Walley (NBR),
Colin Dungan (NBR), Frank Deleo, Gary Belcher, Marianne van Ooij, Matt Strawn, Oren
Efrati, Vinny Spiteri and Wallis Finger. You guys are awesome!
To find out more about Free Fireworks Fridays Group Run, visit the Facebook group
page. Hope you can join us for some Coney Island fun this summer!

CLUB TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS 5M
AUGUST 4 IN CENTRAL PARK
5M RACE – 8:00 MEN; 9:00 WOMEN

This is a race for everyone!  As an inclusive Club, our strength and pride is in our numbers and we want to have lots of members showing up to run, to cheer, to smile for the team picture.  There will be the PPTC after-race buffet.  And the sight of teammates cheering you to the finish line is. . .priceless!

The sstart is at the 102 Sstreet transverse.  The Club will set up a team meeting place on the LEFT side of the east 102nd Street entrance to the Park. Look for the banner.  You can leave your baggage there.  Note:  If you are driving to the race and have room in your back seat or trunk for food or supplies, please email contact@pptc.org.  You know the old saw – many hands. . .etc., etc.

Here are some more details from the NYRR website:

Only members of established and NYRR-recognized running teams (that’s us!) may enter this race; NYRR membership by itself is not enough to qualify. In addition, entrants must have completed at least one NYRR scored/qualifying race between September 1, 2010 and July 30, 2011 for PPTC.  Note:  if you have changed teams, you may not have competed for PPTC until 90 days have lapsed,

Cherry Tree 10-Miler

Cherry Tree 10-Miler

President's Day has come and gone and with it the running of this year's Cherry Tree 10-Miler.  Thanks to Mother Nature for the early spring-like weather conditions - if this keeps up, even the most die-hard global warming deniers are going to be demanding that we drop the "race for the hardcore" description from the name, and we'll have to give the volunteers sunscreen instead of handwarmers.

This year's race was - according to most everyone - a resounding success, with an unprecedented 867 individual 10-milers and 138 relay teams competing.  In a testament to the growing popularity of the race, we came close to reaching the cap of 1,500 before online registration closed.

With the spotlight on safety in the park, and at the request of the Parks Department, we changed the course a little, moving the start off the main roadway and onto Wellhouse Drive.  Thankfully, this was accomplished without too much confusion (everybody not only got but read the memo).

There were plenty of fast times recorded with a close 1-2 finish going to Kieran O'Connor and Michael Cassidy, with times of 52:19 and 52:20 respectively.  The women were led by Jane Vongvorachoti in 59:02 and the first relay team was Front Runners United with a collective time of 55:10.  A special shout-out to the 88 individual PPTC members who ran, led by Tom Greene for the men in 1:02:03 and Laura Vernikoff for the women with a time of 1:11:42, and the numerous PPTC relay teams with Tony's Angels (you know who you are) posting a time of 1:08:55.  Since I value my life, I'll also give special mention to the team anchored by the winner of this year's Harry's Handicap, Bunny Ellerin, who with fellow PPTC member Marcy Greenberg and ringer Shanna Huston posted a very nice 1:31:13.

Our sponsors JackRabbit Sports kindly provided the locations for packet pick-up Thursday through Saturday, whilst Bishop Ford was host to race-day pick-up as well as the post-race refreshments and awards.
